It’s so obvious

When going through something like this, you find out who truly loves you. Not just an on the surface kind of love. But a love so deep that their lives are affected by what you are going through. It’s simple things like seeing them be more grateful for the things they have. A dear friend calling you up to tell you how guilty they feel about going on an upcoming trip. A friend who is far away and it is killing her that she can’t be here to bring you coffee and sit with you. A neighbor who texts or calls you 5 times a day just to check in. The people who truly love you have a hard time going about their day because your pain, is their pain. It’s the petty things in life like buying a pair of expensive shoes, that just doesn’t matter anymore because they are finding out that there ARE more important things in life. Like the fact that your 3-year-old has cancer and your lives will never be the same. My friend Trish, has been sending me amazing quotes via text message everyday. I don’t know if she made this up or if it something she saw somewhere.”True friendship has no agenda.” Amen to that. It is a beautiful thing to see the one’s I hold dear to my heart waking up with a new outlook on life. I makes me feel like even though what we are going through is awful, we are making people’s lives better. Even the strangers we don’t know who write the most beautiful words to me. It is because of all of these things that I am surviving and pushing forward. I am fighting this fight for everyone who knows or hopes to meet Ronan someday.

I’m sad for my friend, Laurie today. She has the little guy Jack who is almost to the end of his treatment. They are in isolation for his stem cell transplant. Jack has been doing great though everything. He is an amazing little boy and our ray of hope. The stem cell transplant has been really, really hard on him and he is in a lot of pain. I’m sad for his parents who have to see their little boy this way and I’m sad that little Jack is hurting so much. I know this is our future and it’s just not fair that anyone should have to go through this. I know Jack is young enough that when he is all grown up and off doing amazing things like becoming a doctor, that he won’t remember this. It’s just a glitch in time and it is going to make him so much stronger than other boys in life.

As I sat down for breakfast with Ronan this morning, I was reading the paper while he watched his cartoons. I turned to the back of the paper and the horoscope section caught my eye. I never read my horoscope, it’s just something I’ve never been into. Well, I am glad I did today. Here is what my horoscope said for today: Instead of wandering around searching for answers, assume that you know all you need to know and that you are here to use your ability to serve others. Wow. Talk about a horoscope being spot on. Maybe I will start reading mine more often.

Ronan and I have a big day ahead of us, full of school, playing, and chores. He is feeling great today and his great days equal my great days. I am so thankful for his “health” today. He is eating a huge breakfast and singing along to his cartoons. He is happy which in turn, makes me happy. I love him so much.

  1. Maya – I’m sure what your family is going through has impacted more people than you could ever imagine. Everywhere I go, people ask me how Ronan is doing and they are following your family’s journey. We just got back from the Dr. as Kenzie has Strep. I guess I passed on to her what I’ve been suffering from. We miss you guys a ton and can’t wait until we’re better so we can see you again!!

P.S. I’m obsessed with my horoscope. I read it every morning and it’s freakishly right more often than not. Hugs and happiness!

  2. Your words ring so very true, Maya. I’m a friend of Kay and Charlie’s and my heart just breaks for all of you. Ronan’s progress is on my mind constantly and I hope it has made me ever more mindful of the blessings I have had.
Again, thank you for sharing your experience. It deeply impacts each of us.

  3. The One who holds the stars in the sky has all the answers. We may not get our answers in this lifetime. It’s up to Him. As humans, as free Americans, we feel it’s our right to know “why?” We scream out to God and get totally pissed when He doesn’t seem to bother give us the time of day. The thing is, He tells us He loves more than anything or anyone. He wants what is best for us. His best. That’s the tricky part that we have to come to terms with. We have to realize that He really does love us and really does know what is best. Praying for Ronan and Jack too.

  4. I love you. You are so amazing. That little boy is so amazing, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of you when you make it through all of this. You are not alone in this fight.

  5. Amazing Maya! There is something to gain out of this happening to Ronan. This is a testament to how strong you and your family are. You have the option to be a victim and be at the mercy of this disease, but you are choosing love, and to fight and to take the good out of this…and that is not the easy choice. It’s ironic that you are getting strength from us out here…because we are getting strength from you and Ronan. I love you guys so much!

Jack is going to come back from this. His body is weak and the stem cells are grabbing hold and gathering forces to do their job. They will keep Jack as comfortable as possible and as hard as it is to see your baby in pain, it is a step forward. You take this day, a good day for you and Ronan, and tuck it away. Together we will pray for Jack and his family and move forward from that. Thinking of you everyday.

  7. Your words speak magnitudes of truth my friend. You are beautiful.

  8. Ditto to Lauren. Truly a great person and family……

  9. Thompsons! – It’s very true about Ronan being in people’s thoughts and prayers that you’ve never met. I know for a fact that one of my friends whom I don’t think you’ve met, reads this blog often, passes information to her Grandmother (whom I’ve never met) and Grandma brings it into her church’s prayer circle.

I miss Ronan, the boys, you and Woody so much, always. Now is just the time to show it. Tell Liam and Quinn that I’m very much excited about going to Wisconsin to watch the Sundevils upset the Badgers.

  10. So happy to hear Ronan had a good today- it brought happy tears to my eyes!

  11. Maya, I think of Ronan and keep him in my prayers every day. One thing I NEVER do is read or depend on anything like a horoscope. It is not something that you will find in the Bible. The Bible, is the Only thing to look to for answers when the going gets tough. If you have trouble understanding it, find someone in a local church that will lead you and Woody through your study. Find the Lord kids he will Love you and keep you, plus he ‘can’ heal your son.

  12. Maya – Believe in whatever you want to believe in…take whatever you can as a sign, and if it brings you a sliver of hope or peace, then grasp it tight and don’t let go. I believe God leads you to whatever you need to see, so that you can take whatever it is you need to take from it…whether it be a horoscope, a billboard on the side of the road, or a song on the radio. I love you! xoxo

  13. Dad – please! I asked that you not do this here! I know you mean well, but if you are just going to bring down something that is bringing Maya hope, strength or peace or whatever, then please keep it to yourself. No preaching needed on this blog, no need to tell her what you’d NEVER do… she appreciates the thoughts & prayers, that’s all you need to say. I’m 100% with Olivia on this… believe in whatever gets you through things.. whatever keeps you sane & strong…

    I’m sorry Maya… xoxoxo
