Our doctors here have been nothing short of amazing. I’ll start with our anesthesiologist, Dr. Maze — who really should be called “Dr. Amazing,” because that’s exactly what he is.
I was standing in the hallway the day after we found out what was going on with Ronan. I was holding him, trying to hold myself together. Dr. Maze saw me, stopped, and pulled me aside to ask what was happening. I had never seen this man before in my life, but the moment he saw how scared I looked, clutching my baby boy, he took the time to find out our story.
He asked who had done Ronan’s anesthesia previously. I couldn’t remember. He smiled and said, “It doesn’t matter. This little pupski is mine now. I’m taking care of you.”
And he has.
This man has been there morning, noon, and night. Even when the nurses say he’s too busy to come, I have them call him anyway — and he always shows up. He does Ronan’s anesthesia, hugs me, tells Ronan he loves him, and promises that everything is going to be alright for his “pupski.”
Last night, he came up just to check on us. He sat with Woody and me and asked how we were holding up. Then he looked at us and said, “Are you two taking any time to be together?”
We both told him that wasn’t really possible right now.
He leaned in and said, “I’m telling you this as your friend — you two need to take time to be together, even during this awful time.”
He said it with such genuine concern in his eyes that you could feel it. This man is so much more than a doctor.
He is one of our angels.
